Fillings & Dental Cavities
When kids need a filling, the experience matters as much as the outcome. We use gentle techniques and calm communication to make it easy.
A good first filling sets the tone for life.
Childhood tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of kids in Canada — by a wide margin. But it's also one of the most preventable, and when it does happen, completely treatable. What matters most for parents is that the experience is calm, gentle, and confidence-building rather than traumatic.
Our pediatric approach uses 'tell-show-do' language, topical numbing before any freezing, smaller and quieter handpieces, and breaks whenever a child needs one. We work with kids — not over them — and parents are welcome in the room.
For very anxious children, or for multiple fillings at once, we offer nitrous oxide ('laughing gas') sedation that takes the edge off while keeping your child awake and responsive.
How a kid's filling visit goes
Show and explain
We show your child the tools in age-appropriate language ('Mr. Whistle' for the suction, 'Sleepy Juice' for the freezing) so nothing is a surprise.
Gentle freezing
Topical numbing gel first, then a slow, careful local anesthetic. Most kids barely notice it.
Quick filling
Most kids' fillings take 15–25 minutes. We use a hand-held, quiet handpiece and let your child take breaks whenever they need.
High-five and a treasure
Every successful visit ends with praise, a sticker, and a tour of our prize box.

Your questions, answered.
Do baby teeth really need fillings? They'll fall out anyway.
Yes. Baby teeth hold space for the permanent teeth underneath. Untreated decay can spread, cause pain, infection, abscesses — and can damage the developing adult tooth. Most baby teeth aren't lost until age 10–12.
Will my child remember it badly?
Not when it's done well. Most kids leave their first filling proud of themselves. The way the visit is handled matters more than the procedure itself.
Is nitrous oxide safe?
Yes — it's one of the safest sedation options in dentistry, used for decades on millions of children. It wears off within minutes and your child can eat and play normally afterward.
How do I prevent more cavities?
Sealants on permanent molars, fluoride varnish at recall visits, twice-daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste, and limiting sugary drinks (especially between meals) make a huge difference.
