Preventive Care
The cavity that never happens is the best filling we'll ever do. Our preventive program is built to keep your kid's smile healthy for life.
Start early. Stay ahead.
The Canadian Dental Association recommends a child's first dental visit by age one or within six months of the first tooth erupting. That visit isn't about cleaning — it's about getting your child comfortable with the chair, checking that everything is developing well, and giving you a roadmap for the years ahead.
From there, twice-yearly recall visits, fluoride varnish, sealants on permanent molars, and good brushing/flossing habits at home form a preventive shield that's wildly effective. Kids who keep up with these basics rarely need fillings.
We coach kids — and parents — on technique, nutrition, and habits that protect tiny teeth from the cavity bacteria that surround them.
What a recall visit looks like
Warm welcome
We let your child explore the chair, the mirror, the little water cup — making the room feel familiar before any work happens.
Gentle cleaning
We polish the teeth with kid-friendly flavored paste and gently floss. No metal tools for young children unless needed.
Fluoride varnish
A quick brush-on coating that strengthens enamel and helps reverse early decay. Tastes pretty good, too.
Parent debrief
We walk you through what we saw, any habits to adjust at home, and what to expect at the next visit.
The Lac La Biche Smiles difference.
Kid-friendly clinic with stickers, prizes, and a treasure box
Patient, calm hygienists trained to work with children
Honest guidance — we won't push treatment your child doesn't need
Free CDCP coverage for eligible families
Your questions, answered.
When should my child first see a dentist?
By their first birthday, or within 6 months of the first tooth coming in — whichever is earlier. That first visit is mostly about familiarisation.
How can I help my kid avoid cavities?
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste (rice-grain amount for under-3, pea-sized for over-3), floss when teeth touch, limit juice and sticky snacks between meals, and don't put a baby to bed with a bottle.
What if my child is scared of the dentist?
We go at their pace. Some kids need an extra visit just to sit in the chair before we attempt a cleaning. That's completely fine — building trust early pays off for a lifetime.
Are X-rays safe for kids?
Yes. We use low-dose digital X-rays only when there's a clinical reason — typically not before age 4–5, and then only as needed.
Ready to book your visit?
Same-day appointments, direct insurance billing, and a friendly team that puts you at ease. We can't wait to meet you.
