Sealants & Fluoride

Two simple, painless treatments that quietly stop the vast majority of childhood cavities before they ever start.

About the treatment

The two best cavity-fighters in pediatric dentistry.

When your child's permanent molars come in (around age 6 and again around age 12), the chewing surfaces have deep grooves that food and bacteria love to settle into. Toothbrush bristles can't always reach the bottom of those grooves. A sealant — a thin protective coating painted into the grooves and hardened with a light — fills them in and turns a complicated terrain into a smooth, easy-to-clean surface.

Sealants reduce cavities on treated teeth by around 80% over the first two years and stay effective for years more. Applying them takes about 5 minutes per tooth, no freezing, no drilling, no discomfort.

Fluoride varnish, applied at every recall visit, complements sealants by strengthening enamel across all teeth. Together, they're the most cost-effective preventive package in dentistry.

The process

How the visit goes

01

Quick clean

We gently clean and dry the chewing surfaces — that's the entire 'prep'.

02

Paint on sealant

A flowing, tooth-coloured resin is painted into the grooves of each molar. It feels exactly like having teeth brushed.

03

Light cure

A blue light hardens the sealant in seconds. Your child rinses, and that tooth is protected.

04

Fluoride varnish

We finish with a flavored fluoride brush-on coating that strengthens enamel for weeks.

Frequently asked

Your questions, answered.

When should sealants be placed?

Ideally as soon as each permanent molar erupts — around age 6 for the first set, age 12 for the second. The earlier they're sealed, the more cavities they prevent.

How long do sealants last?

Typically 5–10 years. We check them at every recall and re-apply if any portion has worn off.

Is fluoride varnish safe?

Yes. It's been used for decades and is endorsed by the Canadian Dental Association. It's painted on, not swallowed, and any trace amount is well within safe limits.

Do adults benefit from sealants too?

Occasionally. If you're an adult with deep grooves and a high cavity rate, sealants can still help. We assess on a case-by-case basis.
