Gum Contouring

A precise, minimally-invasive way to reshape uneven gums or a 'gummy' smile — often in a single visit, with little to no downtime.

About the treatment

Beautiful teeth deserve a beautiful frame.

Your gumline is the picture frame around your smile. When it's uneven, low (covering too much tooth) or asymmetrical, even perfectly straight white teeth can look short or 'off' in photos. Gum contouring reshapes that frame to reveal the smile that's already there.

Using a precise dental laser, we gently sculpt away excess gum tissue, even out the heights of the gumline across multiple teeth, and seal the tissue as we go — which means almost no bleeding, no stitches, and a quick, comfortable recovery.

It's often combined with veneers or whitening as the finishing touch in a smile makeover, but plenty of patients have it done as a stand-alone treatment to fix one detail that's bothered them for years.

The process

What the visit involves

01

Smile design

We mark the ideal new gumline based on tooth proportion, your lip line and facial symmetry. You preview and approve before we start.

02

Numb & laser-sculpt

Under local anesthetic, we use a soft-tissue laser to gently remove and reshape excess gum tissue. The laser seals as it cuts — minimal bleeding.

03

Polish & recheck

We smooth the new contour, take final photos, and walk you through aftercare.

04

Quick recovery

Most patients return to normal eating the same day. Full healing takes 1–2 weeks. No stitches required.

Frequently asked

Your questions, answered.

Does gum contouring hurt?

The procedure itself is done under local anesthetic, so you won't feel pain — just gentle pressure. Mild tenderness for a few days afterward is normal.

Will my gums grow back?

When excess gum tissue is reshaped, the new contour is typically permanent. Underlying bone reshaping (when needed for very gummy smiles) is also permanent.

How long until I can eat normally?

Soft foods for the first 24 hours, then most patients return to normal eating. Avoid spicy or acidic foods for 2–3 days to keep tissue comfortable.

Is this purely cosmetic?

Often cosmetic, but it can also improve hygiene access and tooth-cleaning around the gumline. We'll explain whether your case has functional benefits too.
