Healthy gums are the foundation of every healthy smile.
Periodontal (gum) disease starts as gingivitis — bleeding when you brush, slightly red or puffy gums. It's reversible at this stage. Left untreated, bacteria settle deeper, the body's inflammatory response starts eating away at the bone holding your teeth in place, and gums recede. That's periodontitis, and it's the leading cause of adult tooth loss in Canada.
It's also strongly linked to heart disease, diabetes complications, stroke risk, and pregnancy outcomes — your mouth is connected to the rest of you.
The good news: even advanced cases can be stabilised. We measure gum pockets, locate the disease, and tailor treatment from non-surgical deep cleaning all the way through to specialist referral if needed.

Full periodontal exam
We measure gum-pocket depth at six points around every tooth, check for recession, mobility and X-ray bone loss.
Scaling & root planing
For most cases, a deep cleaning under local anesthetic removes bacteria from below the gumline. We may break this into quadrants for comfort.
Targeted antimicrobials
Where pockets are deep, we may place locally-delivered antibiotic gels or recommend antibacterial rinses to support healing.
Three-month maintenance
Periodontal patients shift from six-month to three- or four-month cleanings to keep bacteria from re-colonising the pockets.

Is periodontal treatment painful?
Scaling and root planing is done under local anesthetic, so you'll feel pressure but not pain. Mild soreness for 1–2 days afterward is normal and easily managed.
Can gum disease be cured?
Gingivitis (early stage) is fully reversible. Periodontitis (later stage) can be stopped and stabilised, but the bone loss it caused is permanent — which is why early treatment matters so much.
Do I need surgery?
Most patients don't. Non-surgical scaling and root planing resolves the majority of cases. We refer to a periodontist only when pocket depths or bone defects truly require it.
Does insurance cover this?
Most plans cover scaling units and periodontal maintenance. CDCP also covers periodontal treatment for eligible patients. We'll confirm your coverage before treatment begins.
