When a cavity needs to be filled, you have two choices: an old-school silver amalgam, or a modern tooth-coloured composite. We exclusively use composite. It bonds chemically to your tooth (so we can remove less healthy tooth structure), it expands and contracts at almost the same rate as enamel (so it doesn't crack the tooth over time), and — most obviously — nobody can see it.
Composite is also mercury-free, which matters to a lot of patients. And it lets us fix small chips, worn edges, and gaps cosmetically using the same material, blurring the line between restoration and smile design.
We also routinely replace failing old amalgam fillings with composite — both for appearance and to remove leaky restorations that are letting bacteria back into the tooth.
What the appointment looks like
Numb gently
Topical gel first, then a precise local anesthetic so you don't feel anything but a brief pinch.
Remove decay
We gently clean out only the decayed portion of the tooth, preserving as much healthy structure as possible.
Bond & shape
We apply composite in layers, curing each with a light, and shape it to match your tooth's contour.
Polish & bite-check
Final polishing makes the surface smooth and natural. We check the bite carefully so the new filling feels just right when you chew.

Your questions, answered.
How long do composite fillings last?
Typically 7–10 years for back-tooth fillings, longer for front-tooth fillings. With excellent oral hygiene and avoiding grinding, often 15+ years.
Should I replace my old silver fillings?
Not unless they're failing — cracked, leaking, or causing sensitivity. If they look and feel fine, we usually monitor rather than replace. We can swap them out for cosmetic reasons if that matters to you.
Will my tooth be sensitive after?
Mild cold sensitivity for a few days is normal, especially for deeper fillings. It almost always settles. Anything that gets worse should be checked.
What if my cavity is too big for a filling?
When more than ~50% of a tooth's biting surface is involved, a filling alone can crack. We'd recommend a porcelain inlay or crown for long-term durability instead.
